Proposal for a = non-tenure=20 research track (RT)

 

Policy=20 Model

Same = as for the=20 clinical track:

=95         =20 Establish=20 University guidelines

=95         =20 Each = colleges=20 would decide whether to develop a collegiate research-track policy =

=95         =20 The = total=20 number of RT faculty could be limited, e.g. to less then 10% of the = faculty=20 within any College.

 

Definition and=20 characteristics

=B7        =20 RT = faculty=20 would have positions through which they contribute to the research = mission of=20 the University, and hold faculty rank at the level of assistant = professor,=20 associate professor, or professor.

o       =20 RT = faculty=20 would devote most of their time to independent, externally supported = research=20 (as principal investigator). 

o       =20 Mentoring=20 graduate students and serving on graduate thesis committees is = desirable, but=20 will require recognition of RT faculty by the Graduate College, perhaps = on a=20 case by case basis. 

=B7        =20 Not = eligible=20 for tenure.

=B7        =20 Faculty=20 governance

o       =20 Would = not vote=20 on tenure decisions

o       =20 Could = serve on=20 relevant  departmental, collegiate and university committees =

o       =20 Other = participation to be defined by individual colleges and the Faculty = Senate. =20

=B7        =20  Would be=20 subject to the provisions of the Faculty Dispute Procedures (modify = III.29.9)=20

 

Appointments=20 and Promotions

o       =20 Research=20 expectations for faculty appointment and promotion in the research track = would=20 be similar to the expectations of TT faculty.  Colleges would = establish=20 written standards of competence and performance to reflect these=20 expectations.

o       =20 Appointments

=A7        =20 Initial:=20  one to three years. 

=A7        =20 Subsequent:=20 Between one and five years.

o       =20 Non-renewal:=20

=A7        =20 Failure to meet=20 written standards of competence and performance

=A7        =20 Changed=20 economic circumstances, including failure of the faculty member to = obtain=20 research funding, or program needs such that the position itself is=20 terminated. 

o       =20 Eligibility for=20 a tenure track appointment.

=A7        =20 RT = faculty will=20 have the opportunity to transition into the tenure track at any time, = but such a=20 transition could only occur once.

=A7        =20 TT = faculty=20 could be appointed to the RT, but without the chance to = re-enter
