Slide Show Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Tips

The Index and Slide Show (on the Tools Menu) allows you to search the program and compile a custom viewing order, which can be used for presentations or study aids.

1. Enter search criteria, in the Peoples, Type, Countries, Function, Source fields, then click Find items. Drop-down menus are available for each field by clicking on the down arrow to the right of the field, or by clicking on the field. You cannot type directly in the fields. Click Reset Fields to clear away previous criteria.

2. Check the boxes under the search criteria fields to include in the list: Objects, Field photos, Text (e.g., chapters, essays), or Media (e.g., video and music clips).

3. When you have selected the search criteria that you want, click on the Find items button. Items matching the search criteria will appear in the field labeled Items Found. Ctrl-click on an item listed in Items Found to view it.

4. Click on an item in Items Found to select it (the item will turn BOLD). Click on
Move Selected to move the selected items to the Slide Show. Or, click on Move All to move all the items to the Slide Show list at once.

5. In the Slide Show list, click, hold, and drag an item to re-arrange Slide Show order. Shift-click to delete an item in the Slide Show. Ctrl-click on an item in the Slide Show list to view it. This will also bring up the Slide Show controls (see #11 below).

6. Click on Save List to save current Slide Show to a file.

7. Click on Open List to open a saved Slide Show or Bookmark list. Note that opening a saved list clears the current Slide Show list.

8. Click on Print List to print current Slide Show list of items.

9. Click on Clear List to reset Slide Show list to empty.

10. To append the current bookmarks to the current Slide Show list, choose Add Bookmarks to Slide Show from the Bookmark menu. Bookmark files and Slide Show files are interchangeable. Note, however, that in Windows 95/Windows 98, the menus within the ALA program do not scroll. Therefore, the Bookmarks menu can only display as many items as will fit on the full screen-length of the menu.

11. Click on Run Slide Show to view the items in the current Slide Show list starting with the first item. Slide Show controls will appear in the lower left-hand corner of the screen; use these arrows to navigate through the Slide Show in sequence. Within the controls box, click on the red arrow next to the words "Slide Show" to see the complete Slide Show list. This list functions like the Slide Show list in the Slide Show Maker: click, hold and drag an item to re-arrange the Slide Show order, shift-click to delete an item, ctrl-click to view an item. You can also add the current screen to the Slide Show by clicking on Add this screen in the Slide Show controls box.

12. Choose "Stop Slide Show" from the Tools Menu, or click on the square button in the Slide Show controls, to exit the Slide Show mode. The controls box will disappear.

13. Choose "Index and Slide Show" from the Tools Menu, or click on the Index button in the Slide Show controls, to return to the Index and Slide Show screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I add the map of Africa to a slide show?

To add the Countries Overview map of Africa to a Slide Show list, first make a Slide Show list with other items and run it. With the Slide Show controls displayed, choose "Countries Database" from the Resources menu. Click on the red triangle to expand the Slide Show controls. Then, click on the Add This Screen button. The Countries Overview screen will be added to the bottom of the list. You can then click and drag this item to any place in the Slide Show.

2. How are items listed in the Items found box?

When you do a search for items in the Index and Slide Show, items are always listed in the following order in the Items Found box:

3. How do I copy a Slide Show list to include with my lesson plan?

Copy and paste are not enabled within the Art and Life in Africa CD-ROM program.

It is possible, although not recommended, to use the following technique from a saved Slide Show list file. (Please note that you should NEVER edit a saved a Slide Show or Bookmark file in a word processing program. Always work with a COPY of the file.) Open a copy of a saved Slide Show or Bookmark file. Within the file, you will find a series of codes at the top of the file. Scroll through the file until you see the list of items as they appear in the Slide Show list. You can copy the list from here, and paste it into another document. Windows users should note that the list will appear with the wrong end-of-line character; you will need to replace this character with a regular end-of-line character in your document.

4. Can I search for more than one People or Country simultaneously?

No, you cannot search for more than one criteria in any given search field at a time in the Index and Slide Show, or in the Images Overview. For example, you cannot search for both "Yoruba" and "Dogon" in the "Peoples" field simultaneously. In order to include items for both groups, you would need to search first for "Yoruba," select items from the Items Found list and move them to the Slide Show list, and then do a second search for "Dogon," and similarly select items to move to the Slide Show list.

5. How can I preview the text before including it in my slide show?

There are two options:
