Glossary

cabalistic:

Having secret or hidden meaning.

cadence:

The rhythm or flow in speech.

cajole:

To urge with gentle and repeated appeals, teasing, or flattery.

calabash:

A gourd like fruit which may be dried and hollowed out. Often used as a container or rattle.

capricious:

Subject to whim; impulsive and unpredictable.

capsulized:

Summarized, condensed.

caryatid:

A column sculptured in the form of a female figure.

caste:

A social class separated from others due to social position, profession, or wealth.

cavities:

Holes.

cavorted:

Having lively or boisterous fun: romp.

celibate:

One who abstains from sexual intercourse.

celts:

Common tools of stone or metal, shaped like a chisel or ax head.

cepholomorphic:

An object which has the form of a head.

chameleon:

A tropical lizard characterized by its ability to change color.

charismatic:

Exhibiting magnetism, enthusiasm, or charm.

chieftaincy:

Referring to the role of a leader or head of a group.

choreography:

The creating and arranging of actions or performances. Something, such as a situation or series of situations or a plan or series of plans, compared to dance arrangements.

chromolithograph:

A colored, mass-produced print.

cipher:

A system of writing, sometimes secret.

circumspection:

Being aware of circumstances and potential consequences: prudent.

cistern:

Something used to hold water or other liquid, especially a tank for catching and storing rainwater.

clairvoyant:

Having the power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses.

clerics:

Members of the clergy.

climax:

The point of greatest intensity.

coalesced:

Come together to form a whole.

coalitions:

Alliances or groups of people united towards a given goal.

cognatic:

Related by blood; having a common ancestor.

cohesive:

Something that sticks or holds together; may be an object, culture, or idea.

coiffure:

A hairstyle.

coiffures:

Hairstyles.

collaborators:

People who work together in a joint intellectual effort.

collectively:

Done by a number of people acting as a group, or considered as a group.

colonial:

Relating to the process by which a nation maintains or extends its control over foreign nations.

colonialism:

A policy by which a nation maintains or extends its control over foreign nations.

colonization:

The process of a distant country establishing political control over another country or territory.

commemorate:

To honor the memory of with a ceremony.

commemorative:

Honoring or preserving the memory of another.

commissioned:

Placed an order for something. Also, to put into active service.

commodities:

Treated as an object of trade or commerce.

communion:

The act of sharing, such as thoughts or feelings. Also, religious or spiritual fellowship.

comportment:

Bearing, behavior, or conduct.

concentric:

Having a common center.

conceptually:

Relating to or consisting of concepts or ideas.

concrete:

Of or relating to an actual, specific thing; particular. Also, something existing in reality.

condign:

Deserved.

confederacy:

A union of persons, parties, or states.

conferred:

Presented or applied such as a title. Also, given authority or power.

configuration:

Arrangement of parts or elements.

configuring:

Arranging or shaping for a specific application or use.

confluence:

A flowing together of two or more streams.

congeries:

A collection.

connoisseurs:

People with expert knowledge or training, especially in the fine arts.

connotations:

Ideas or meanings suggested by or associated with a word or thing.

connotes:

Suggests something more than the literal meaning.

consecrated:

Declared or set apart as sacred.

conservative:

Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.

constitution:

The composition or structure of something; makeup. The physical makeup of a person.

construction:

The way in which something is put together; may be a material thing or a concept.

contention:

Debate.

contexts:

The circumstances in which an event occurs; a setting.

continuities:

Uninterrupted flow; continuous.

continuities and vicissitudes:

Involvement in things which may stay the same and/or constantly change.

convention:

A widely used and accepted technique, as in drama, literature, or painting.

cool reserve:

Aloofness.

corporate:

United or combined into one body; collective.

corporate body:

The group of people formed for specific purpose, usually to govern.

corpus:

A collection, or the main body of work.

correlates:

Relates to something else; of similar or equal value or meaning.

corrugations:

Patterns shaped into folds or parallel grooves.

cosmograms:

Forms that incorporate a theory or model of the universe, includes natural phenomenon as well as religious concepts. See the opening sequence for this CD.

cosmological:

Referring to a model of the universe which includes both natural phenomenon as well as religious beliefs.

cosmology:

A theory or model of the universe, includes natural phenomenon as well as religious concepts.

countenance:

Appearance, especially the expression of the face or facial features. Also, support or approval.

coup:

Often refers to a coup d'état, the sudden overthrow of a government by a usually small group of persons in positions of authority. Also, any brilliantly executed strategy.

covenant:

A binding agreement or plan.

cowrie(s):

A molusk found in warm water worldwide. The small 'money' cowries used as a form of currency in Africa come from the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean.

crest:

Something placed on the top of a hat or head. Also, a design or symbol used to represent the identity of an individual or group.

crotals:

Small round bells.

crystallize:

To take on a definite, precise, and usually permanent form.

cultural contexts:

The circumstances in which something is found or occurs in a particular culture.

cuprous:

Related to copper.

cutlass:

A short heavy sword with a curved single-edged blade.
