Glossary

iconographic:

Relating to the forms associated with the subject or theme of a work of art.

iconography:

Symbolic forms associated with the subject or theme of a work of art.

idealization:

To make or think of something as an ideal, perfected example.

ideograms:

Characters or symbols representing ideas without using the words for them, as in the traffic sign commonly used for 'no parking.'

idyllic:

Simple and carefree.

illuminated manuscript:

A book made by hand, and highly decorated, also by hand. Each manuscript is then one of a kind.

imbued:

To inspire, fill, or invade.

impermeable:

Impossible to enter.

impetuously:

Characterized by sudden and forceful energy or emotion; impulsive and passionate.

implicit:

Implied or understood though not directly expressed.

implored:

Begged.

impropriety:

An improper act.

in the literature:

Literature here refers to a body of writing on a specific topic.

inanimate:

Inactive, dull, or dead.

incantations:

Ritual recitation of prayers or the like to produce a specific effect.

incarnate:

Given bodily nature and form; personified.

incipient:

Beginning to exist or appear.

incised:

To engrave into a surface; carve.

inculcating:

Teaching by frequent instruction or repetition; indoctrinating.

indigenous:

Originating or living in an area or environment; native.

indigenous idiom:

A speech form or expression that is particular to a specific area.

indomitability:

Incapable of being overcome or subdued; unconquerable.

inexplicable:

Unexplainable.

inherent:

An essential characteristic.

innate:

Existing in one since birth.

inquisitive:

Eager for knowledge.

insatiably:

Incapable of being satisfied.

insignia:

A badge of office, rank, membership, or nationality; an emblem.

integral(ly):

Essential or necessary for completeness.

intercession:

Acting in favor of another, especially a prayer or petition to God.

intercessor:

Someone who acts in the favor of another, especially by offering a prayer or petition to God.

interlaced:

Connected by lacing together.

intermediary:

A mediator or an agent between persons or things.

interred:

Buried.

interregnum:

The time between the end of a leader's reign and the beginning of the successor's.

intimate:

Very personal or private. Also, marked by close acquaintance or association; familiar.

intimately:

Done in a very personal or private manner. Also, marked by close acquaintance or association; familiar.

inversion:

The changing of the order of things, often in reverse form.

investiture:

The act or formal ceremony of giving the authority and symbols of a high office.

invocations:

The act of calling on a higher power for assistance, support, or inspiration.

invoking:

To call on a higher power for assistance, support, or inspiration.

irascible:

Prone to outbursts of temper, easily angered.

itinerate:

To travel from place to place.
