Objectives (what will be assessed?):

To introduce the cd-rom "Art and Life In Africa" the students will analyze African art and photographs to formulate generalizations.

Description/Background:

The students will investigate photos and art of a particular culture group. This activity will serve as an introduction to the cd-rom and the study of Africa.

Step by Step Procedure:

From the homepage students will click on the word countries. This will bring up a map of Africa. From the map of Africa students will then select a country and bring up the country profile on the screen. Then choose one or two groups of people from the category "Selected Peoples". Click on one of the groups of people and then examine the photographs and art. Based on the works examined write generalizations about the culture of the people. Students will then place their generalizations on the large sheets of paper hanging on the wall. During the study of Africa the list will be used as reference for the unit of study. While covering new material our findings will be compared to our generalizations.

Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):

The assignment serves as an introduction to the cd-rom Art and Life In Africa. Uses photographs and art from the Types of Art folder within the countries site on the homepage.

Studio Materials Needed:

Butcher Paper, Markers, Tape.
