Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Student will research a specific region of African and related architecture.
Student will observe and verbally describe architecture using elements/principles of design.
Student will create architecture inspired from African research.
Description/Background:
Students will need a background on the elements and principles of design prior to beginning the culture unit. Students will also need to use a specific research method. Have handouts with an outline of the research process and questions to ask.
There will be seven African countries stations set up. Students will research the architecture of a particular country. Once students have completed their research they can create their own 3-d, African inspired architecture.
Step by Step Procedure:
1. Intro to research process on CD and stations.
2. Show slide show of African architecture.
3. Have students break into small groups and choose a specific African country to research their architectural styles.
4. Have students draw sketches and write notes in a journal.
5. Group check of progress.
6. Upon completion, students will compare to an American structure.
7. Students will create there own structure, inspired from African designs.
8. Structures will be discussed/evaluated in small and large groups.
9. Structures will be displayed with descriptive information.
