Title/Lesson/Theme: Cloth-wrapped dolls

Objectives (what will be assessed?):

Identification of geographic location of Burkina Faso and Tanzania. Identification of characteristics of wooden dolls as shown with visual images from ALA. Creation of a simple cloth doll embellished with assorted found objects.

Description/Background:

Using teacher developed slide show from ALA discuss background and visual characteristics of African dolls. Demonstrate process for students.

Step by Step Procedure:

1. doll head: crumple piece of material (6"x6") forming into ball shape and wrap thread around material until piece is a tight ball

2. body: using piece of light weight cotton material (12" x 12") placing head in center of material pull around head piece using light weight string wrap around head piece creating neck of doll knot and tie off.

3. arms & legs: with head in center, pull material out stretch on table top, gather top sides up dividing sides to form arms - wrap each with string turning over end edges wrapping each arm tightly. For legs make a small cut up towards the middle of the body and wrap each leg then as with the arms. Continue wrapping chest area of doll with string until body is formed and tight and knot and tie off string.

4. Clothes and physical embellishments: yarn pieces for hair and a variety of found objects and assorted material can be used for clothing attaching with white glue, ribbon and string. Fine-tipped permanent markers can be used for facial features.

Studio Materials Needed:

Fabric scraps (one 12" x 12" & one 6" x 6" piece of material per student)

Assorted yarn, ribbon, buttons

Light weight string

Thread

Permanent thin markers

White glue (Aleens tacky glue works well)

Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:

Verbal assessment in locating given areas geographically.

Group critique and presentation of individual students dolls with interpretation of characteristics found in their dolls which coincide with African dolls they have viewed.
