Title/Lesson/Theme: Africa. Celebration through a Mask

Objectives (what will be assessed?):

Students will learn about the many roles Masks play in African culture. Students will discuss events in their own lives and plan/design their own mask to commemorate this occasion.

Description/Background:

Masks in African society reflect many key moments in the life cycle of the people and culture. The students will transfer this idea to events in their own lives. They will design and create their own mask to represent this occasion. Follow up to the study of African Art will include the annual 3rd. gr. UI art museum field trip.

Step by Step Procedure:

1-Present slideshow on African masks.

2-Discuss events in students personal lives that might be celebrated by their own mask.

3-Discuss mask making techniques,tools, materials.

4- discuss decoration, expression,design.

5-Design their own mask on paper.

6-Demonstration on paper mache and building techniques.

7-Build mask.

8-paint and decorate.

Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):

ALA CD: text, images, field photos, media, under "Masks."

Studio Materials Needed:

paper mache materials(flour,water,newspaper), tempera paints, found objects to build and decorate mask, masking tape, scissors, hot glue gun used by adult/teacher, elastic or rope to tie mask on to head.

Africa(map), mask, expression, functional, decorative,found objects, ceremony, event

Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:

Student involvement and completion in project. Meaningfulness to personal life. verbal feedback from students on their finished mask. Follow up for their understanding of this presentation/project will also occur during the annual 3rd. gr. UI Art Museum field trip.
