Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Understanding why African artists use animals in some of their masks and how these masks are used in performance.
Description/Background:
Observe dance performance using masks. Using newspaper to make a pattern find your eyes and cut out eye holes. Then decide what animals you will use think about the shapes of ears, noses, etc. If your first shape doesn't work use several sheets of newspaper and assemble the parts that work for you. Then draw this shape on oaktag cut it out and begin to decorate with markers, paint and found objects. Brainstorm ways to keep the mask on.
Step by Step Procedure:
Observe a slide show of African masks. (find masks with animal features - click here to view or download sample slide show list) Discuss which animals the artists chose and why he made this choice and what the animal may symbolize. (strength , selfishness, swift movement, flying, jumping) Discuss the animals that you know. What characteristics do they have that you like. What is your favorite animal.? Could you combine animals to form a mask for yourself.? What kind of occasion would you use this mask. Discuss this with the class and arrange a performance wearing your masks.

Newspaper, scissors, oaktag markers , paint , cloth, feathers, yarn, many found objects, glue.
