The students will view together with the teacher maps, field photos, and text about families and children from three different African countries.

The students through writing and discussion will compare and contrast what they view to families and children from the United States.

Description/Background:

The students will view together with the teacher maps, field photos, and text about families and children from three different African countries.

The students through writing and discussion will compare and contrast what they view to families and children from the United States.

Step by Step Procedure:

1. Load ALA CD ROM into the computer.

2. Begin with the bookmark of the map of Africa pointing out the variety of counties.

3. Start the slide show(click here to view or download sample slide show list) and point out the variety of peoples in the country of Burkina Faso and where the country is located in Africa.

4. Show the next slide of Mossi Marriage Music and compare to weddings in the United States.

5. Show the next two slides of families of Mossi people, Burkina Faso. Discuss how they compare to pictures of families in the United States.

6. Show the next five slides, all pictures of children, and have the students write down at least one thing that is like children in the United States and one thing that is different. After each slide have students share what they wrote.

7. Do the same for the slides for Nigeria and Tanzania, again starting with the map and then going through the slides.

8. Share slides with text related to field photo slides.

9. End with a discussion of whether the children from Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Tanzania are more like children from the United States or less like them.
