Objectives (what will be assessed?):

The students will see slide show and video pieces on the Bwa people of the Burkina Faso area. We will have a discussion on the slides. The students will make their own mask with cardboard and brown, red, burnt sienna, black, and white tempera paint.

Description/Background:

The student will become aware of the beauty of the shape, design, and color of these masks. They will become aware of the significance of these masks in the Bwa peoples lives.

Step by Step Procedure:

1. In the first period the students will view the slides and videos on a large screen in the front of the room. We will discuss the slides. Students will draw a sketch on a smaller rectangular piece of black drawing paper and gold crayons.

2. The second period the students will draw their model unto a large oblong piece of cardboard sheet cut on the paper cutter.

3. The students will tempera paint these long sheets.

4. The painting will be continued this week.

5. The students will listen to music made by the Bwa people and we will dance. Children in the lower grades are tactile learners.

Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):

Slides on the Bwa people and the Burkina Faso area.

Studio Materials Needed:

Slides, videos, music from the Art and Life in Africa CD-ROM. Black construction paper-9"x 18", gold crayons, black, red, white, and burnt sienna tempera paint, and cardboard- 12"x 24" or 12"x 36".

Vocabulary:

Bwa people, Burkina Faso, geometric shapes.

Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:

Students will have gained an understanding of the Bwa people through discussions, viewing slides, painting, and dancing.
