for the Multimedia & Second Language
Acquisition Course
General Information
The FLARE Poster Session is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4, in the International
Programs Commons (1117 University Capitol Centre, setup at 2 p.m.). All class members are required to participate in
this event and present their projects via a poster.
The purpose of your poster
is to present your project in a readable, viewer-friendly form. All of the
posters will be displayed in the International Programs Commons on
easels. Our audience will walk around looking at the posters and may ask
you questions about your project.
A poster should be complete
and self-supporting so that different viewers may continue at their leisure.
The author should only need to supplement or discuss particular points raised
during inquiry.
Remember that people of varying degrees of interest
and experience may be viewing your poster at once. Therefore you will want
to make your points as complete and brief as possible.
Planning
The display boards are 30 inches high and 40 inches across, but your poster
should only use half of the available space. So that you can lay out
your display in advance, we recommend that you purchase a sheet of posterboard
(known as Railroad Board) measuring 22" wide by 28" tall. This is available at Dick
Blick for under $1 (68¢ to be exact). You may also choose to use half of the display
board and attach your pages with pins when you arrive in advance of the
poster session. Arrange your materials as indicated on the reverse
side of this sheet.
Material should be mounted on colored posterboard for contrast, because white paper on the white poster will not
stand out enough.
The standard elements are:
project title, your name, course, abstract, and three pages with screen shots with commentary.
Use large enough type so that
the poster can be easily seen from a short distance. We recommend 18-
or 24-point size, depending on the font you use. 14-point is too small.
Title
Prepare a banner for the top
of the poster indicating the title, author(s), and course.
Lettering of the title and author(s) should be
large and appealing.
Text
Minimize the narrative. Use
large type in short, separated paragraphs.
Do not set entire paragraphs
in boldface or capital letters.
Numbered or bulleted lists
are a concise but effective way to convey a series of points.
Handout
In addition to the poster, most presenters will have
a handout. For the MM&SLA projects, however, we will prepare
a composite handout for all class members. You will need to email
your instructors a revised brief abstract, about 50 words, by noon on Monday,
December 3 .
