The course presumes some background in understanding cultural contexts of meaning, such as that encountered in courses about gender, race, class, or culture (Intercultural Communication is useful but not required). We focus on theories of culture and the impact of cultural differences on communication through reading both theoretical works and case studies of intercultural communication. Students choose among cultural dilemmas such as bilingualism, gender and sexuality in cultural perspective, interracial relationships, US foreign policy, and so forth to construct an in-depth research effort.
