Registration Information

Early Registration

The date and time currently enrolled students are assigned to register is based upon the number of hours earned, and, if applicable, according to special circumstances (i.e. athletic participation, students with disabilities, etc.).  Registration times and dates are assigned by the Registrar’s Office.  If you have a question or concern regarding the date and time you register, you should go to Room 1 Jessup Hall and ask to speak with someone regarding your assigned registration date/time.

Registration Clearance

You will be notified via email each semester regarding Registration Clearance Information!

U-bills must be paid, immunization records must be completed, and transcripts must be on file to be eligible to register!

Prerequisites

It’s important to read the course description and prerequisite information available on ISIS.  Students should register only for the courses for which prerequisites have been met and are needed to satisfy major requirements.

Codes on ISIS

D-Codes – Majors only
During Early Registration, the department puts a D-code on most 036 courses on ISIS and the D-code restricts registration to only officially declared Communication Studies majors.  Non-majors are required to wait for the “D” code to be removed from the desired 036 course before they can register.  D-codes are automatically removed from 036 communication courses on the fourth working day after early registration ends.

X-Codes – Special Permission
Whenever an X-code is in the Spe column on ISIS, special permission is required before a student can register for the course.  In most cases when an X-code restricts a communication course, specific prerequisites must be met first.

H-Codes – Honors Section
The H-code indicates the section is reserved for honors students.  Students must either be in honors or have a UI GPA of 3.33 or higher at the time of registration.  The Department will automatically and administratively change the section of any student who does not have the required 3.33 UI GPA in the honors section.

Two Course Limit during Early Registration
Communication Studies majors can register for only TWO (2) Communication Studies courses during Early Registration.  This process allows all majors to have an opportunity to take courses in the major.
Majors wishing to take more than two 036 communication courses should add them to their schedule during the three days after Early Registration ends.  The Department leaves D codes on courses until the fourth working day after early registration ends to provide majors an opportunity to register for additional Communication Studies courses.

Closed Classes/Sections

In the Communication Studies Department, the Academic Counselor or Department Administrative Assistant are the only persons who can determine whether or not a student can be added to any communication course and it is only when a seat is determined to be available according o the department’s enrollment data that a student can be added to a closed course.  In some cases, a student’s only alternative will be to select an alternative course.

Since Communication Studies faculty and teaching assistants do not have the ability to add students to their classes, students should refrain from emailing Communication Studies faculty or teaching assistants to request to be added to a course or section.

Additionally, the department does not maintain waiting lists for classes.

Add/Drop Forms

After classes start, students must use an Add or Drop form to make changes to their schedule.  Forms are available on the ISIS log-in page and should be completed with the course information including the section number.

To add or drop Communication Studies courses, students need to obtain appropriate signatures from the Academic Counselor in Room 162 or the Administrative Assistant in Room 105 BCSB.  Communication Studies faculty and TA’s do not sign add or drop forms at any time.
