Undergraduate Major in Communication Studies

Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships

The Department distributes awards and scholarships to students annually.  All students are encouraged to apply for these awards and scholarships, and an application is available in the Communication Studies Advising Center – Room 162 BCSB or on the rack outside Main Office – Room 105 BCSB.

C. J. Starr Award:  This award is given each year to a Communication Studies junior undergraduate who will be working closely with a faculty member on a special academic project which shows promise of publications in the field of Communication Studies. 

Jerome and Marian Feniger Award:  This award is given each year to an undergraduate, upper-class major who shows outstanding promise in broadcasting. 

Cristen Loza DeBighley Award:  This award is given each year to an undergraduate who has made outstanding contributions to the Department’s mission through her or his work. 
 
Sam Becker/Herb Meinert Scholarship:  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding junior, senior, or graduate student working toward a BA or MA degree in Communication Studies.

H. Clay Harshbarger Award:  This award is given to graduating Communication Studies Honors Students with the highest Departmental GPA who also complete an Honors thesis.

A. Craig Baird Award:  This award is given to a junior or senior major who is also participating in the Forensics Program. 

Joseph Sitrick Broadcasting Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate major with academic work and interests in broadcasting. 

Patrick and Kimberly Hatting Scholarship:  Awarded to a Communication Studies major with preference given to students from Poweshiek county. 

Orville Hitchcock Awards:  These awards are given each year to graduating Communication Studies majors with the highest cumulative grade point averages.

Robert P. Newman Award:  This award is given each year to a graduating senior with an outstanding Departmental and overall grade point average.
