Please join us for our Latino Graduation Reception, honoring our Latino graduates, on Thursday, May 15, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm in the South Room of the IMU (events will begin around 4:40 pm). 

President Sally Mason will be recognizing our graduates and their family and friends.  We hope to have many faculty and staff present to honor these students, and to meet their families.

Made in L.A. Screening

Location: 101 Biology Building East, UI campus


Details: Free film screening of a documentary about immigrant garment workers in Los Angeles. Made in L.A. has won several awards and tells the story of three Latina women striving to gain workers' rights from a major fashion retail chain.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A with the director via Skype-link. For more information about the film, visit Made in L.A.

Assistant Professor
Department of History

Omar Valerio-Jimnez is new to the History Department this year. He is currently completing his first book, Rio Grande Crossings,which combines his research interests in the histories of Chicana/os, the American West, and borderlands. The book explores state formation and cultural change along the Mexico-United States border during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It traces changes in ethnicity, citizenship, and gender relations among residents as jurisdiction over the area passed from native peoples to Spain, Mexico, and finally the United States. His research is based on Spanish- and English-language archives in each of these countries.

Film Screening: "The Bronze Screen" honors the past, illuminates the present, and opens a window to the future of Latinos in motion pictures. From silent movies to urban gang films, stereotypes of the Greaser, the Lazy Mexican, the Latin Lover and the Dark Lady are examined. Rare and extensive footage traces the progression of theis distorted screen image to the increased prominence of today's Latino actors, writers and directors. Snacks will be provided.

Armando Duarte, professor in Dance, has graciously offered to host the Council on the Status of Latinos Potluck on Nov. 16, from 5:30 -7:30 pm at his Coralville home. 

Please let me know if you can join us!  We ask that people bring a dish and drink to share.  The Council will provide the paper goods, so you only need to bring food, drink and a good spirit.  Armando asks that you bring wooden floor - friendly shoes (he just had his floor refinished) as dancing may be possible.

Everyone is welcome and  refreshments will be provided. Please plan on attending and inviting  your friends.


The Main Library is hosting an exhibit for the 2007 Hispanic Heritage Month.  It is located across from the Information Desk, near the elevator.

The display features selected items from the Iowa Women's Archives' "Mujeres Latinas" project and highlights University of Iowa Hispanic and Latina/o students, faculty and alumni, as well as resources available in the Main Library about the Hispanic and Latina/o experience.


Mujer Meetings

This group is designed to bring together Latinas from diverse backgrounds to discuss their experiences living in Iowa. Discussion topics will include the past, present and future status of women and the Latino/a community.

The group will meet on Thursdays, 6:00-7:00 pm, beginning September 13 through October 25.
