Alternatives to the second proseminar

"The small groups in the Honors Seminars are a really excellent way to learn more in depth, and to be inspired to study new areas.  Studying in a group of ten or so with one professor is really exciting.  There is so much more camaraderie with classmates in those courses. "

-Michael Roston, 2001 English Honors Graduate

Honors proseminars are limited to 15 students, carry 4 s.h. credit and meet three hours each week. In order to prepare students to research and write theses, these courses require substantial reading and research and culminate in a 15-20 page essay.

We've found that the students who do the best in proseminars are those who have taken Intro to English Major: Theory & Practice, 008:005.

English faculty members often teach proseminars on topics closely related to their own research projects, yielding enlightening and engaging classroom discussion. Past proseminars have considered everything from Radio Essays to Paradise Lost to Digital Poetics.

All interested students need to obtain a special permission number from the Honors Director to enroll in an honors proseminar. English majors planning to graduate with Honors in English are given priority during the pre-Registration enrollment period.

Students who wish to graduate with honors must take two proseminars and receive an A- in at least one of them before beginning work on their theses. In some cases, other academic experiences can be substituted for the second prosminar.
