My greatest scholarly delight is the study of the Middle Ages. I'm particularly interested in the literature and culture of late medieval Britain, with a special focus on the fraught relationship between England and Scotland in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. I'm fascinated by the vital role literary representation played in Anglo-Scottish conflict, and the ways in which that literary representation influenced not only developing medieval nationalisms, but current Scottish, English, and even American nationalisms as well. My related interests include medieval Latin, book studies, and medieval performance and theatricality. When I'm engaging in solacia rather than sententia, I love spending time with my wife, Julianne, and my pet cats and house rabbit, not to mention dabbling in photography, computing, and restoring antique radios.
