Marty Gould received an MA in English from the University of Arkansas in 1998 and an MA in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi in 2001. He is currently writing his dissertation, a study of the imperial politics of the Victorian stage. Based on a study of over two hundred plays, this project investigates the deep connection between the worlds of literature, spectacle, and empire to show how London's popular theatrical venues brought to life the ideologies which supported and motivated Britain's imperial project. Individual chapters examine the Victorian theatrical Robinsonade, the recurring figure of the stage nabob, dramatizations of the Australian gold rush, and theatrical representations of the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
