I came to the University of Iowa after completing a master's thesis at the University of Illinois at Chicago on the relationship between seventeenth-century scientific writing and the prose style and narrative of Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders. The way that seventeenth- and eighteenth-century science and eighteenth-century British literature inform one another is still my primary interest and the focus of my dissertation, "Character Matters: Enlightenment Materialism and the Novel." Related interests include theories of characterization, theories of the "rise of the novel," and Science Studies.
