Recruitment Manual

President's Message

Thank you for your participation in the recruitment and selection of professional and scientific staff at The University of Iowa. Our P & S staff are valued, full partners in achieving excellence at our institution. Your role in the search, screening, and selection process is critical in helping the University achieve its goals.

As stated in our strategic plan, The Iowa Promise, the University pursues its mission of teaching, research, and public service by advancing scholarly and creative endeavor; enhancing undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, health care, and other services provided to the people of Iowa, the nation, and the world; and educating students for success and personal fulfillment. In order to prepare our students for their future careers, we must recognize that they will likely be employed in environments that are increasingly more diverse and global than in past generations. Increasing the diversity of our community will promote excellence in education at The University of Iowa. Our aspiration to become one of the ten most distinguished public universities in the nation depends greatly on our becoming an educational community reflective of the greater society around us.

To fulfill our promise, we aspire to recruit the most talented faculty, staff, and students. To do so, we must provide a welcoming environment where all can discover and realize their potential. We must hold all parts of the University community accountable for improving the climate for diversity and building a critical mass of underrepresented faculty, staff, and students.

Diversity is one of our core values. All members of the UI community who participate in the recruitment of professional and scientific staff can have a profound effect on our collective commitment to diversity. I encourage you to use this manual to help us fulfill that obligation. I thank you for your dedication to this important goal.

David J. Skorton
President
