InSite: Old Capitol Museum Now you can tour Iowas oldest landmark without leaving your desk The Old Capitol Museum web site, www.uiowa.edu/~oldcap/, covers the territorial, state, and University history of the Old Capitol. It features a clickable tour of the rooms, detailed descriptions and photos of artifacts in the Old Capitol collection, and a glossary of architectural terms. The Old Capitol Classroom section includes a teachers guide and information aimed at fourth- and fifth-grade students. It also includes links to other museums and Iowa-related sites. "We see the web site as a way to continue our mission of preservation and education," says museum director and web site designer Ann Smothers. "We wanted to make the Old Capitol accessible to all people, whether theyre from a distance away, or are doing research." The site, 18 months in the making, was recently named the first recipient of the 1999 Web Site Award presented by the Iowa Division of Tourism and the Travel Federation of Iowa. It was cited for its ease of use, and for its appeal to "potential travelers, teachers, children, or history buffs," something that particularly pleased Smothers. Molly Burgess Smith, a graduate student, designed the site along with Smothers, and copy for the site was written by Smothers, Margaret Keyes, professor emerita, and Bette Thompson, retired director of the Old Capitol Museum. And while the virtual tour of the Old Capitol is highly recommended, dont forget that you can leave your desk and hoof it on over to the real thing, seven days a week.
