New technology enhances old illustrations

Sceleti Tabula I, above, is just one image available to visitors to the Anatomia Universa web site, www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/mascagni. Newly implemented QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) capabilities permit dynamic zooming and panning across each of the beautifully executed plates, allowing scholars to interact with and analyze the images. The University’s copy of Anatomia Universa, created between 1823 and 1832 by anatomist Paolo Mascagni, is one of only three or four copies in the United States.

Foundation reports more givers in 2001

Last year a record number of contributors made a record number of gifts to the UI Foundation in support of The University of Iowa, foundation officials announced on Feb. 22.

In 2001, more than 56,900 contributors—8.2 percent ahead of 2000—made nearly 100,000 gifts to the foundation, making last year the best year on record for the number of gifts and the number of donors to the foundation.

“Despite 2001 being a year of economic and other uncertainty nationwide, the $64.8 million we received in outright gifts for the UI last year is less than one percent behind 2000, the record year to date for outright gifts to the UI Foundation,” says Michael New, the foundation’s president. “We are tremendously grateful to our donors for sustaining their support during a very turbulent year.”

Women’s excellence celebrated

A Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women has been rescheduled for March 25, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. A reception will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the awards program at 5 p.m. in the IMU Main Lounge.

The program is free and open to the public. No dinner is planned this year.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. Persons who require an accommodation in order to participate in this program, call (33)5-3114 in advance. An American Sign Language interpreter will sign the awards ceremony.

Nominations due for IOWA

Last year 138 staff members in teams or individually were awarded the IOWA.

Nominations for teams and individuals are being accepted until March 15 by the review committee. Information and forms are available at the web site, www.uiowa.edu/hr/worklife/iowa.html, or by calling (33)5-0560. This program is funded by Staff Council and Athletics.

Correction

The following career development award was omitted from the Feb. 22 issue. fyi regrets the error.

Jeffrey Segar, pediatrics, will learn experimental methods that allow measurement of the number and size of cells in the fetal heart muscle. His goal is to better understand how the heart muscle changes in response to intrauterine stresses, in order to develop new treatments for congenital heart disease.
