Who are the givers among us?

Charlie Anderson. Photo by Tom Jorgensen.

Name: Charlie Anderson

Position: Associate professor emeritus of speech pathology and audiology; docent at the Museum of Art and chair of the museum’s volunteer committee

Years at Iowa: 30 (1966-96)

Beneficiaries of his gifts to the University: Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, Hancher Auditorium, Museum of Art, WSUI/KSUI

Why he contributes: “I was reared in a culture that said you need to participate in and contribute to your community in order for it to flourish, so I started giving to the University and United Way. I’ve been using payroll withholding since I arrived on campus, starting at $5 to $25 on up. Faculty and staff don’t have to give a lot of money to have it be worthwhile. It’s the breadth—not the depth—that counts.

“I wanted to see the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology thrive. I figured if I’m not committed, how can I expect others to be? Part of leaving a legacy is promoting the excellence of education we have here.”
