New logo, wordmark unveiled: Help is a call away
The University began implementing its new logo and wordmark in mid-October. This list of frequently asked questions should help units understand more about using them. For more information, visit www.uiowa.edu/graphics or contact Lesanne Fliehler, director of University Relations Publications, (38)4-0042, lesanne-fliehler@uiowa.edu. When can I start using the new graphics? UI colleges and departments may begin using the graphics immediately. The UI Printing Department has the graphics available and can substitute them in place of the old graphics on any materials designed and/or printed there. In addition, local freelance design firms are aware of them and will be implementing them on materials they design for UI clients. Are the dome and word-mark available electronically? Yes. Currently, the identity web site (www.uiowa.edu/graphics) has graphics available for Macintosh users. Graphics for use on PCs will be available soon. When can I no longer print materials with the old graphics? March 15, 2003, is the cutoff date. After that time, materials will be printed with the new graphics. What should I do with materials I have in stock that contain old graphics? Should I throw them away? Please use them up! Once youve exhausted your supply, any materials printed after March 15, 2003, will contain the new graphics. Will there be new letterhead and other stationery items? Yes. New letterhead, business cards, envelopesjust about any stationery items youre using todayare being redesigned. All stationery must be produced at the Printing Department. Currently, the identity web site contains a downloadable PDF file of letterhead samples to choose from. The new letterhead and business cards use two colors (black and yellow). The site soon will have other PDF samples of business cards, envelopes, and other items. What are some of the new features of the stationery system? Two standard layouts with several options each are available for the letterhead. The letterhead will be printed in two colors (black and yellow). It will have a one-inch margin at the left instead of the former 1.5 inches. The stationery contains a larger live area which can accommodate more text, and it is printed with wax-free inks that will not stick to and ruin the heated drum inside toner-based printers. In addition, business cards will be printed in black and yellow. They can be printed on the back side, and a foldover business card also is available. Envelopes will be printed in black ink only. How should the logo and wordmark be used beyond stationery and envelopes? The two elements should appear on the front cover of all printed communications available to external audiences. The wordmark should appear on the back cover. At the identity web site (www.uiowa.edu/graphics), youll soon find an Identity Manual in a downloadable PDF format. This document has more details regarding the standards, lists of people to contact if you have questions, and samples of stationery items available. In addition, University Relations staff members are offering one-on-one consultation services and are presenting a Staff Development seminar, Implementing UI Graphic Identity Standards, throughout the academic year (see www.uiowa.edu/~fusstfdv for dates). Will I be able to continue to use my units logo on our materials? Two years ago, when former president Mary Sue Coleman and the vice presidents decided to pursue a new logo and wordmark for the University, one of their goals was to reduce the proliferation of logos around the University. Many logos already in use may continue to be used. New logos will be reviewed by a group of staff members convened by the Office of the Vice President for Research and External Relations. How do I use the logo and wordmark on a web site? Their use on the web is under development.
