Vote for your favorite Herky
Still pondering your pick for best statue from Herky
on Parade?
Don’t forget to tell fyi which one is your
favorite, and why, so that your name will be entered
into a drawing for free tickets to the throwback
football game on Sept. 4, when Iowa plays Kent State.
Need a refresher? Photos of and maps to the 75 Herkys—displayed
throughout the Iowa City/Coralville area in celebration
of Kinnick Stadium’s 75th anniversary—are
available online at www.herkyonparade.com.
We’re also asking for some creative discussion
about what themed Herky you would have liked to have
seen as part of the parade, if you had been designing
one yourself.
Send your votes and your Herky-wanna-be notes by
July 16 to fyi associate editor Amy Schoon at amy-schoon@uiowa.edu or
300 PCO–Suite 370. Include your full name,
department, and campus phone number. We’ll
reveal the results in the August issue.

Changes in cleaning practices
UI offices will be cleaned less often as a result
of budget reductions in fiscal year 2005. As of July
1, custodians will empty trash cans and clean offices
once every other week.
The service reductions, saving about $250,000, are
in response to recommendations by the University’s
General Education Fund (GEF) Task Force. Facilities
Services Group will reduce its staffing requirement
levels through attrition and redistribution of custodial
assignments.
There will be no changes in the cleaning practices
or schedules for labs and public spaces, including
entrances, hallways, restrooms, and classrooms. Employees
assigned work areas in GEF space, however, can expect
the following additional changes:
• Office trash pickup will coincide with office
cleaning, once every other week. Staff, student workers,
and faculty members who prefer to have their trash
removed between scheduled days may remove the plastic
trash can liner and set the bag in the main hall
outside their offices for removal. Extra liners are
in the trash can.
• Each building has a recycle bin for individuals
to deposit their recyclables. Custodians will continue
to empty the building recycle bin.
• External window washing has been eliminated.
If you have service-related questions or concerns,
contact the Work Control Center at (33)5-5071 or
fsg-wcc@uiowa.edu.

ideas, begin professional networking, and explore
the possibilities of graduate education. Many UI
faculty members and graduate students participate
as mentors and volunteers.
Car pool web site now online
The Parking and Transportation Department has developed
an interactive web site for its car pool matching
service. The site allows UI employees to find others
who are interested in carpooling by using the Human
Resources self-service web site. The service is available
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For more information, call (35)3-5770 or visit www.uiowa.edu/~parking/carpool_home.html.
