35 years and counting

The UI Afro-American Cultural Center, shown above, will celebrate its 35th anniversary July 23 with a number of festivities. There will be an open house from noon to 4 p.m.; panel and roundtable discussions from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.; and a tour, rededication ceremony, and reception from 4 to 5 p.m. Lilia Abron, a UI graduate and the center’s first director, will present a keynote address at 8 p.m. in the Richey Ballroom, IMU. A dessert reception and dancing will follow. For more information or to register, e-mail billie-townsend@uiowa.edu, tracie-melvin@uiowa.edu, or carlos-serrato@uiowa.edu. (Also, the Iowa Black Alumni Association will hold a reunion July 23-25 to celebrate its 40th anniversary. For details, see www.iowalum.com/ibaa.) Photo by Tim Schoon.

Fleet Services to hold auction

The annual Fleet Services vehicle auction will be held at 10 a.m., July 10, south of the Fleet Services building on Madison Street, and will last approximately one hour.

The gate will open at 8:30 a.m. to allow potential bidders to inspect the vehicles. Additionally, as the vehicles are being prepared for sale, they will be available for viewing in lot 64, behind the Cambus garage on the corner of Prentiss and Madison streets.

For more information or to see photos of the vehicles, go to www.uiowa.edu/~uifleet.

Vote for your favorite Herky

Still pondering your pick for best statue from Herky on Parade?

Don’t forget to tell fyi which one is your favorite, and why, so that your name will be entered into a drawing for free tickets to the throwback football game on Sept. 4, when Iowa plays Kent State.

Need a refresher? Photos of and maps to the 75 Herkys—displayed throughout the Iowa City/Coralville area in celebration of Kinnick Stadium’s 75th anniversary—are available online at www.herkyonparade.com.

We’re also asking for some creative discussion about what themed Herky you would have liked to have seen as part of the parade, if you had been designing one yourself.

Send your votes and your Herky-wanna-be notes by July 16 to fyi associate editor Amy Schoon at amy-schoon@uiowa.edu or 300 PCO–Suite 370. Include your full name, department, and campus phone number. We’ll reveal the results in the August issue.

HR training sessions set

In response to requests from departments for additional training, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity and the Department of Human Resources are offering two more training sessions on the preparation of the Faculty/P&S Requisition/Recruitment Plan in the HR Transaction System.

The sessions will be:

  • 9-10:30 a.m., July 12, 1505 SC; and
  • 1:30-3 p.m., July 16, E140 GH.

To register, e-mail dorian-walker@uiowa.edu and list your first-choice session, name, department name, job title, e-mail address, and campus phone number. No confirmation letters will be sent out. Attendees should plan on attending their first-choice session unless otherwise notified.

These training sessions eventually will be offered on a quarterly basis through UI Learning & Development. For more information, e-mail jennifer-modestou@uiowa.edu.

Changes in cleaning practices

UI offices will be cleaned less often as a result of budget reductions in fiscal year 2005. As of July 1, custodians will empty trash cans and clean offices once every other week.

The service reductions, saving about $250,000, are in response to recommendations by the University’s General Education Fund (GEF) Task Force. Facilities Services Group will reduce its staffing requirement levels through attrition and redistribution of custodial assignments.

There will be no changes in the cleaning practices or schedules for labs and public spaces, including entrances, hallways, restrooms, and classrooms. Employees assigned work areas in GEF space, however, can expect the following additional changes:

• Office trash pickup will coincide with office cleaning, once every other week. Staff, student workers, and faculty members who prefer to have their trash removed between scheduled days may remove the plastic trash can liner and set the bag in the main hall outside their offices for removal. Extra liners are in the trash can.

• Each building has a recycle bin for individuals to deposit their recyclables. Custodians will continue to empty the building recycle bin.

• External window washing has been eliminated.

If you have service-related questions or concerns, contact the Work Control Center at (33)5-5071 or fsg-wcc@uiowa.edu.

SROP conference to offer events open to faculty and staff

The Graduate College will host the Summer Research Opportunities Program Conference, July 9-11, in collaboration with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an academic consortium of Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago.

Several conference events are free and open to the UI community:

• Talk of Iowa Live from the Java House, 10 a.m., Java House, and Live from Prairie Lights, 8 p.m., Prairie Lights Books, July 9: Both events feature Joy Harjo, a poet-musician and UI graduate, and will be broadcast live on WSUI AM-910.

• “The Power of Mentoring in Graduate Student Success,” Part I, 2:30 p.m., and Part II, 3:30 p.m., July 9, Richey Ballroom, IMU: A discussion for faculty and staff who work with students.

• Cultural exhibit, 1-7 p.m., July 10, 181 IMU: Displays include “History of Latinas and African American Women in Iowa,” “Memory and Oblivion: Legacies of Enslavement in the Americans,” and more.

The annual conference, which the University last hosted in 1990, brings hundreds of undergraduate students and faculty sponsors to campus to exchange ideas, begin professional networking, and explore the possibilities of graduate education. Many UI faculty members and graduate students participate as mentors and volunteers.

Car pool web site now online

The Parking and Transportation Department has developed an interactive web site for its car pool matching service. The site allows UI employees to find others who are interested in carpooling by using the Human Resources self-service web site. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For more information, call (35)3-5770 or visit www.uiowa.edu/~parking/carpool_home.html.
