Ready to counsel

University Counseling Service, the primary mental health agency serving University students, is offering a pamphlet, “Helping Students in Emotional Distress: A Guide for Faculty and Staff,” in hard copies and online at www.uiowa.edu/~ucs.

Sam V. Cochran, director, says the service provides timely psychological consultations for students requesting services as well as ongoing individual, couples, and group counseling.

Psychoeducational outreach programs for the campus community also are available. Cochran also is available to attend faculty or staff meetings to discuss issues pertaining to managing difficult student behavior situations.

Improve your English

The Department of Linguistics’ English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is offering a new class this fall: Iowa Intensive English Communication Skills for Professionals.

The course is designed to improve listening and speaking skills for international professionals, such as visiting scholars, postdoctoral employees, and research staff. It includes not only conversational fluency but also improved skills in language needed for discussions and presentations.

For more information, contact ESL Programs, 38 MH, (33)5-5630, or www.uiowa.edu/~iiepesl/IIEP/professionals.

Volunteer training set

The Women’s Resource and Action Center has scheduled two training programs at the center: one to train volunteers as group facilitators to lead support and discussion groups and the other to train members of the Iowa Women Initiating Social Change (IWIC) activism volunteer program.

Training begins 6-8pm, Sept. 8, at the center. Group volunteers will receive 20 hours of training Sept. 8-20. IWIC volunteers will receive 17 hours of training Sept. 8-29.

Space in both programs is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. To register or arrange for accommodations, call (33)5-1486.
