The University launched
a new antispam and antivirus system last month that
will help all UI e-mail accounts
filter unsolicited e-mails and prevent virus attacks.
The spam software adds “spam?#” at the
beginning of the subject line in messages that are
identified as having more than a 50-percent probability
of being spam. As the spam probability increases,
the number of “#” characters in the subject
line increases. For example, a spam probability of
more than 50 percent receives one #, more than 60
percent receives two #s, and so forth.
The process makes it easy to identify potential
spam and allows e-mail readers the flexibility to
create custom spam filters suitable to their needs.
All e-mail users are encouraged to visit www.its.uiowa.edu/cs/email/anti-spamfaq.html for instructions on how to create filters specific
to their e-mail client.
This software tool also helps protect against viral
attacks. In the first week of implementation, the
service prevented half a million attempts to infect
UI e-mail accounts. For more information about the
antivirus service, see www.its.uiowa.edu/cs/helpdesk/virus/virusfaq/virusfaq.htm.
