IMU chefs dish out delectable goodies at a recent "Lunch with the Chefs"
IMU Food Services chefs John Moloney (foreground), Barry Greenberg, and Jason Holmes serve helpings of Aunt Bea’s broccoli salad and Andy’s pipe down pork chop casserole with mashed potatoes at last month’s Lunch with the Chefs outside the IMU Main Lounge. The monthly event showcases the work of the IMU chefs through a unique theme luncheon—this one was “Welcome to Mayberry.” Upcoming events include a Russian menu on Dec. 11 and an Australian menu on Jan. 22. For details, see www.imuis.uiowa.edu/food/lwtc/index.shtml. Photo by Tom Jorgensen.

The Office of the Registar has published its fall 2003 profile of students online at www.uiowa.edu/registrar/profile/20033_profile.pdf. Paper copies will no longer be distributed, but they may be ordered from the Copy Center at a cost of $7.

Highlights of the report include:

  • Total enrollment for fall 2003 is 29,745—the largest enrollment ever at the University;
  • Fifty-four percent of the students are women, while 8.8 percent are minorities; and
  • Iowa residents comprise 63.5 percent of the total enrollment.

Staff Development offers professional development awards for fee-based courses

Staff Development is continuing to fund professional development awards through a lottery drawing. Winners will receive free admission to a fee-required Staff Development event.

All permanent UI staff members, 50 percent time and greater, are eligible to apply for a professional development award. To apply, select a course from the spring 2004 special events listed at www.uiowa.edu/~fusstfdv/courses/special_events/spring_schedule.html. Then, send the following information to Staff Development, 121-51 USB, or fax to (33)5-2644: name, department, campus mail address, event/course title, and event/course date(s) and times.

Applications must be legible and received by 5 p.m., Dec. 12. Only one application per person will be accepted. Applications will not be accepted via phone or e-mail. All eligible staff members who submit a completed award application by the deadline will be notified by campus mail.

SkillSoft® courses serve thousands

More than 3,000 faculty, staff, and students have taken advantage of SkillSoft®, a free online learning program coordinated by Staff Development.

A catalog of 200 professional development courses is available, with subjects ranging from leadership and management to workplace effectiveness and information technology. Learning simulations take as little as 30 minutes; courses range from two to eight hours and can be bookmarked.

The courses are offered around the clock at no charge to anyone on campus with an IBM-compatible computer and an Internet connection. Users must have a HawkID and password. For more information, see http://skillsoft.uiowa.edu.

Honors Program moving to Blank Honors Center

The University Honors Program will move into its new offices in the Blank Honors Center (BHC) on Jan. 6, 2004.

The program’s new facility will offer classrooms on the first and second floors; study rooms, an ITC, a research library, and student commons spaces on the third floor; and a conference room and staff offices on the fourth floor. Staff of the Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development will be housed on the sixth floor.

Emergencies on campus:
Whom to call if something goes wrong

For all emergencies that require law enforcement and in the case of fire, ALWAYS call 911.

Emergency situations should be reported to law enforcement by dialing 911. When 911 is dialed, the Iowa City Police Department will receive the call and contact the University Department of Public Safety (DPS) using a dedicated line between the two departments if the incident is located on University property. The 911 call also will appear on a computer screen in the DPS dispatch center.

For building emergencies, call 5-5071

Building emergencies include those problems that can cause escalating damage to University facilities and property if not attended to quickly. An example of a building emergency would be flooding (e.g., a toilet overflowing). Facilities Services Group has someone on standby 24 hours per day/7 days per week to respond to emergency situations. For emergencies of this nature, always dial the Work Control Center at (33)5-5071. During normal working hours (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), your call will be answered. After hours and weekends, you will get a recorded message that will prompt you to press “0” to speak to someone directly about a building emergency.
