Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week offers numerous celebratory events on UI campus

The University of Iowa will recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week with several activities through Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Human Rights Week activities are listed below. For a complete and updated list of events, view the calendar at www.uiowa.edu/~mlk/schedule.html. Previous events included the Community Convocation on Monday, Jan. 21, which featured UI president Sally Mason as the keynote speaker. The Gospel Explosion Praise Choir, the Quire, and Voices of Soul all performed at the convocation.

All events during Human Rights Week are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Jan. 22

  • Stomping Out Stereotypes, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Illinois Room, 348 Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). Introduction of this program and a series of engaging activities and social theories to be conducted and discussed in break-out sessions.
  • An Evening of Poetry, 6 to 8 p.m., Afro-American Cultural Center, 303 Melrose Avenue.

Wednesday, Jan. 23

  • Diversity Discussions, 12:15 to 1 p.m., HP Conference Room, 256 General Hospital.
  • Community of Color: Getting Connected, 4:30 p.m., Van Oel Multipurpose Room, Currier Hall.
  • Dialogue on Diversity Workshop, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Kirkwood Room, 257 IMU.
  • Bayard Rustin: To Be Black, Gay, and a Civil Rights Leader, discussion and movie, The Life of Bayard Rustin, the Man Who Organized the March on Washington, 6 to 8 p.m., Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, 125 Grand Avenue Court.
  • "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence" presentation of MLK's speech and discussion from community members and civil rights activists about current race relations in the United States, and the U.S. presence in Iraq, 7 p.m., Bijou Theater, IMU.

Thursday, Jan. 24

  • The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of Latino Image in Hollywood, film screening, 4 p.m., 2032 Main Library Conference Room.
  • ¡Salud!; a screening of a documentary about the health system of Cuba, 5 to 7 p.m., Minnesota Room, 347 IMU.
  • Las Mujeres de la Caucus Chicana, film screening, 7:30 p.m., Iowa City Public Library, meeting room A.
  • The UI Darwin Turner Action Theatre presents a one-woman show, I Got Something to Say: A Black Women's Sonata, by Tisch Jones, 8 p.m., Theatre B, Theatre Building.

Friday, Jan. 25

  • Community Outreach Drive, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Second Floor Ballroom, IMU, clothing drive, food drive, blood drive, personal hygiene product drive, pet supply and food drive, diaper and baby food drive, and items for the elderly drive.
  • "Preparation for Tomorrow's Dentist; Care for Today's Underserved Populations," noon to 1 p.m., Oral B Seminar Room, N212, Dental Science Building.
  • "Building Bridges from the Past, to the Present, to the Future," a lecture on diversity by Jacqueline M. Hughes-Oliver, professor of statistics and director of graduate programs in the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University, 3:30 p.m., Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber. The lecture is hosted by the Ethnic Inclusion Effort for Iowa Engineering, Iowa Alliance for Graduate Education, and the Professoriate (Iowa AGEP) and the Department of Mathematics.

Saturday, Jan. 26

  • Economic Human Rights Conference, to empower and educate people experiencing poverty, to join in an international dialogue, and raise community awareness about poverty. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Richey Ballroom, IMU.
  • "Still Pursuing the Dream," potluck and social gathering, 5 to 7 p.m., 1117 University Capitol Centre, International Commons.
  • "The Sacred Music of Duke Ellington," Turtle Island String Quartet with Stefon Harris, 7:30 p.m., Hancher Auditorium.

Sunday, Jan. 27

  • Potluck, 5 to 7 p.m., Latino Native American Cultural Center, 308 Melrose Avenue.

Monday, Jan. 28

  • EOD Moving Forward Together Series, 5:30 to 7 p.m., W401 Pappajohn Business Building.

Wednesday, Jan. 30
