"It’s a huge issue. The school nurses are out there almost on their own." Ann Marie McCarthy, associate professor of nursing, concluding that the rising number of children who take medication at school, coupled with no additional increase in school nurses or health support programs, has lead to widespread medication errors (The Record, Hackensack, N.J., Jan. 15).

"Saying a product promises healthy-looking teeth is different from saying it promises healthy teeth." Karen Baker, associate professor of oral pathology, radiology, and medicine, cautioning consumers to read toothpaste companies’ advertising claims carefully (Rocky Mountain News, Jan. 20).

"For many incoming freshmen, the upfront cost of a computer—even if it’s offset by some financial aid—is just too much." Kenneth Brown, assistant professor of management and organizations, shaking his head over Massachusetts’s plan to require students at state colleges and universities to own laptop computers (Online Learning Magazine, March 2001).

"If you want to ban a group anytime they bring any difference and close the borders and erect fences and not allow anybody else inside, you are going to see that not much good happens to those inside the fence." Susan Mask, director of affirmative action, excoriating Iowa state Sen. Steve King’s proposal to prohibit the use of public funds for scholarships that give preference to minority, international, or non-Iowa students (Iowa City Gazette, March 30).

"I call it the Mary Tyler Moore myth. Everyone thinks they will go to work and find a wonderful group of people to serve as family and friends, like Mary Tyler Moore did in the 1970s sitcom. In reality, employees find dullards and irrational bosses." Benjamin Hunnicutt, professor of health, leisure, and sport studies, affirming that the Lou Grants of this world are outnumbered by the Ted Baxters (Workforce, April).

"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time." James Van Allen, professor emeritus of physics and astronomy, taking a modest bow for his accomplishments documented in the recent film James Van Allen: Flights of Discovery that aired on Iowa Public Television (Des Moines Register, April 7).

"This is a very exciting discovery, because it’s adding to our knowledge base of the potential of adult cells to provide a stem cell population." Mary Hendrix, head of anatomy and cell biology, seeing promise in the use of adult fat, such as that removed during liposuction, as a source of stem cells for research (Los Angeles Times, April 10).
