Public Safety joins holiday campaign Along with local law enforcement, Public Safety officers will observe Lights on for Life Day on Dec. 15. On this day, motorists across the country will be asked to use their vehicle headlights during the day to show support for the prevention of impaired driving. The campaign will continue through the weekend, which is National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend, with highly visible law enforcement, including sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. The department also will promote cooperative community campaigns such as designated-driver and safe-ride programs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration created the campaign to help reach the national goal of reducing alcohol-related traffic fatalities to no more than 11,000 a year by 2005. Johnson County averaged eight such deaths and 94 injuries per year between 1996 and 1998. For more information about the campaign, contact Brad Allison at (33)5-5043 or brad-allison@uiowa.edu.
