Teaching Load Project, Department of Geoscience, final revision.
Approved by the faculty: October 10, 2001
Approved by the CLAS: April 3, 2002

Each year, faculty in the Department of Geoscience are expected to teach: (1) a total of 30 points in the classroom (component A), and (2) a total of 10 points in directed studies, senior & honors theses, and graduate student advising (components B + C). Low efforts in components B + C can be compensated by additional effort in component A.

Notes:
- Up to two extra points will be given for “first-time taught”, “labs but no TA”, and extensive setup.
- One extra point for scheduled overnight field trip
- One extra point for lecture with > 40 but no TA, or for a lecture class with > 90 but no head TA
- Team-taught classes are allocated points based on the percent effort determined by the DEO. The total effort for all participating faculty can exceed 100%
- Undergraduate courses with less than 5 students will get the same credit as directed study courses. Courses with < 5 students and a majority of graduate students will receive an additional 2 points.

+One extra point if labs are designed by the instructor.

*The following policy will stand as long as the number of faculty in the department are too low to accommodate the essential required summer classes within their normal course teaching load. If summer courses required for Geoscience and Environmental Science degrees are taught by faculty in addition to a full course load of approximately 30 points for an academic year and the faculty receive extra compensation, then they will be awarded half the normal point allocation. All other weekend, summer, or evening courses will receive the full allocation of points or extra compensation. The impact of the points granted for teaching these courses on the % effort allocation on PTEAP forms will be negotiated with the DEO.

Rationale for point allocations in classroom teaching:

(1) Points should largely be based on effort, while recognizing that some incentives for larger class sizes should remain. For example advanced level classes for the major require considerable effort, despite the smaller student numbers compared to GE classes.

(2) The lack of TAs to help with large classes requires extra effort on the part of the instructor, as does managing the TA staff for large GE classes.

(3) The required summer field courses are critical for Geoscience or Environmental Science BS degrees. Current staffing does not allow these classes to be part of a faculty member’s standard teaching load. Therefore, to make teaching these courses attractive, faculty should be allocated ½ the normal number of points if they receive extra compensation and the full point allocation if they do not receive extra compensation. Other courses taught in summer, weekends, etc. should be given full effort-based points or extra compensation.

(4) The maximum number of points one can receive for any single class is 18, which is 2 points shy of the required teaching effort for a semester. This recognizes the need for faculty teaching any class to remain involved in guiding graduate students and undergraduates in research projects. The “average” class: a three unit lecture class with about 10-15 students, should receive 10 points (1/3 of the classroom teaching for an academic year).

(5) The field orientation of our department is important, and field trips require considerable effort. Thus, scheduled overnight field trips for classes should be given an extra point.

(6) Points allocated for participating in team taught courses are based on the percent effort for each faculty member. For example, if each faculty member teaches ½ of the course, and participates no further, then they will receive ½ the normal allocation of points. If each faculty member participates in 100 % of the classes, then each faculty member will receive the entire normal allocation of points.

(7) The effort allocation is considered to have an error of ? 3 points. The DEO may adjust point inequities by as much as 3 points in consultation with the executive committee.
