CRISP is an electronic scientific research journal. All articles are peer-reviewed. We publish articles representative of a broad range of theoretical orientations, empirical methods, analytic strategies, and substantive topics. Material that is unlikely to be published in CRISP includes opinion and editorial manuscripts, empirical research that is not theoretically grounded, book reviews, and work outside the purvey of social psychology. Manuscripts must conform to the following guidelines. CRISP does not have a copy editor. Thus, authors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions meet the following criteria. Since CRISP is an electronic journal, special formatting guidelines must be followed in order to ensure the readability of the paper by reviewers using a wide range of word-processing software. Also, the guidelines below ensure the accurate rendering of the article on our Web site, irrespective of readers' platforms and systems, should it be accepted for publication. Failure to conform to these guidelines will result in the editor returning the manuscript to you (without an external review).
If you are using MS-Word, you may find it helpful to download the CRISP Ms-Word Template: crispmsword.dot. Also, turn off ALL auto-formatting before you begin preparing your manuscript. If you are planning to send us a manuscript prepared outside of the template (e.g., one that had been sent to another publication outlet first), then you may have to "correct" your manuscript for several auto-formats that we will not accept (these are detailed below). To find some of them, use the "View Hidden Characters" command in MS-Word. This will reveal many tabs, extra spaces, and other formats. You will still have to scan your paper for other formats that violate CRISP's submission guidelines.
1. Authors may only have one paper in the CRISP review process at a time. Once a terminal editorial decision on a paper has been made (i.e., Accept or Reject), then authors may submit another paper. They may not, however, have more than one paper in the review process at CRISP at a time.
2. Format submissions in MSWord using 12-point Times (or Times New Roman) font for all text and tables. Please give the document a short name. We prefer "lastnamecrisp.doc" (e.g., "troyercrisp.doc"). Transmit the submission as an email attachment to the editor, michael-lovaglia@uiowa.edu.
3. Set up the page size for 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper size (US Letter). All pages must be in portrait layout. Do not use a landscape layout for any pages. Also, do not use page breaks or section breaks to format the manuscript (i.e., let the pages break naturally). Use Times or Times New Roman 12-point font for all text (including tables, table notes, endnotes, and text in figures).
4. Do not use headers or footers (including page numbers -- do not insert page numbers).
5. Endnotes/footnotes should be avoided. When they are necessary, an endnote should be used. Do not, however, use the endnote/footnote function in MS-Word to produce them. Instead, they must be manually entered. The endnote number should be entered in the text in brackets (e.g., "[1]") following the passage to which the footnote corresponds. They should not be superscripted. The endnote is then entered in a section at the end of the paper, with the heading "ENDNOTES" (all capital letters).
6. Single space all copy. Include blank lines between paragraphs, between references in the REFERENCE section, and before and after subheadings.
7. Left justify copy including title, authors names, headings and subheadings. Use all capital letters for headings. Capitalize the initial letters of words in subheadings. References in the reference section should be left justified (not "hanging").
8. Avoid the use of symbols and other special characters (they do not reproduce consistently across different computing systems). In presentation of statistical results, refer to test statistics and parameters by spelling out the term (e.g., "alpha" instead of the character).
9. Use American Sociological Review format for references. Do not use a bibliographic software (such as EndNote) to produce the references. They must be manually added.
10. The prototypical CRISP manuscript is relatively short (3000 - 5000 words including a 100-word abstract and references). Crisp, clear writing is the goal. Longer manuscripts will be considered but slow the review process. All manuscripts must reflect correct U.S. English grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
11. Use active voice, rather than passive voice. For example, "A study was conducted" is passive voice. In contrast, "We conducted a study" is active voice. Active voice is generally easier to read and clearly distinguishes the work that the author completed from the work of other researchers cited in the paper.
12. Embed tables in the text at the appropriate point.
13. Tables must be created with the MS-Word table editor (i.e., do not use tabs and spaces to create tables). Each row in the table must be created in the table editor as a row. In other words, do not use hard returns to represent rows.
14. Figures should be avoided. They should only be used if they add to the information in the paper. They should not be used if the information they contain is redundant with information reported in the text or tables. If figures are absolutely necessary, they must be prepared as GIFs and sent as attachments with the paper. The figures should not incorporate color.
15. If analysis of variance or regression methods are used in the analysis, a correlation matrix must be provided (as an appendix) that includes all variables in the analyses. The matrix must be prepared as a table and should also include variable means and standard deviations.
16. If new scales are introduced in the paper (e.g., personality, emotion, cognition), then the complete scales must be included in an APPENDIX to the paper. Appendices follow the REFERENCES section.
17. Acknowledgements may be included as a note. Use the title "AUTHOR'S NOTE" or "AUTHORS' NOTE" immediately before the AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES (see below).
18. Include an AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES section after the references and after any appendices. Provide a few sentences of biographical information including the email address of each author.
