We're writing to extend to you an invitation to submit an abstract for the 10th annual James F. Jakobsen Graduate Conference in March 2008. The Jakobsen Conference is held annually and spotlights the work of graduate students from across the entire Graduate College. The event is co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Senate and the Graduate College with the goal of giving The University of Iowa graduate students an opportunity to gain additional experience presenting their research in a conference-like atmosphere without having to leave home. This year, the Conference will be the capstone to the Graduate Student Recognition Week, showcasing presentations from scientists, mathematicians, writers, musicians, artists and the many other members of the University of Iowa graduate community. In addition to getting to know some of the remarkably diverse research endeavors going on at the University, at least $6,000 will be awarded amongst the top submissions of the five major divisions of the Graduate College. Last year's Forum presented cash awards ranging from one hundred to three hundred dollars to over 40 graduate students.

The conference events begin with the culminating event to celebrate Graduate Student Recognitions week on Friday, March 28 in W10 PBB. We are very honored to have Professor and Dean Emeritus D.C. Spriestersbach give a presentation entitled, "The Way It Was: 60 years of Graduate Excellence at The University of Iowa." The 2007 D.C. Spriestersbach Distinguished Dissertation Award Winners Dr. Michael Chasar and Dr. Michael Koenigs will also talk on Friday evening. in addition there will be graduate presentations on Friday night.

The formal conference will be held on Saturday, March 29th in the Blank Honors Center. During the morning and afternoon on Saturday, students from Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, Biological and Life Sciences and Math, Physical Sciences and Engineering will present their work in poster and oral sessions. Throughout the day we are also very excited to offer some professional development/learning workshops. We will feature a room full of resources for all students attending, with a theme entitled, "Graduate 101: Surviving, Thriving, and Presenting your Research." We will hold a rountable discussion in this room where undergraduate students interested in research and graduate life can interact with current graduate students at The University of Iowa. We are also honored to feature Dr. Susan Johnson, who will present a workshop entitled "Landing Your First Faculty Position"

Directly after the conference, we will head to the Levitt Center to enjoy a social networking mixer, with free food and drink set to a subtle background of elegant piano music performed by our own Alexandra Nica. Displays and performances from students in Fine and Performing arts will be featured and announcements of winners of the Jakobsen Conference awards will be made.

The day is a fantastic opportunity for students to get experience in presenting their work at professional meetings and a high point of team-building in The University of Iowa graduate community. We extend a warm invitation to all Faculty, Staff, Graduate, and Undergraduate students at The University of Iowa to attend the conference events on Friday night and Saturday at the Blank Honors Center. In addition, we invite the local community to attend and interact with graduate students from across the entire campus.

With over 120 submissions, excellent and engaging speakers, great resources, and free food at every opportunity, it's certain to be an excellent event! See you at the conference!
