Volunteer Descriptions:
Parade Setup
You are responsible for setting up any of the following: parade announcer stage, folding chairs, tables, or the Informational Tent.
Grandstand Security
You are responsible for security around the grandstand where the judges and announcers are located (see map). You will remain in your position throughout the parade, most likely keeping spectators off of the grandstand allowing the judges and parade announcer to maintain a clear view of the parade entries. If anyone tries to enter the grandstand, ask to see their ticket and direct them to the ticket taker. If they don ’t have a ticket, direct them to watch the parade from a different location. If the problem persists, you may leave your position to get an Iowa City Police Officer of Homecoming Council Member.
Ticket Takers for VIP Seating
You are responsible for taking tickets around the VIP seating. You are there to ensure that only our VIP’s are seated in this location. There should be other security located in the area too. EVERYONE MUST HAVE A TICKET TO ENTER. If you have any serious problems you can’t resolve, locate an Iowa City Police Officer or Homecoming Council Member to help you.
Route Personnel
You are in a position along the route. You will be stationary, most likely walking up and down a single block as entries pass by. Your primary responsibility is to keep the crowd (specifically children) out of the way of the route. We have a large variety of types and sizes of entries, so it’s important to keep the crowd out of the street entirely. Your position is critical to the parade entries as well as the safety of the crowd. Watch the parade carefully and know what entries are coming. Be specifically prepared for the large sizes of bands and entries containing horses.
Perimeter Personnel
You will be stationed at one of the perimeter positions along the parade area. You will be positioned next to an Iowa City Police Officer an assist him at the intersection you have been assigned to with various activities, such as letting parade vehicles in and out of barricades and traffic management.
Bus Concierge
You will be stationed as a School Bus Concierge somewhere along Jefferson Street. Buses will begin to arrive after 3:00 pm and will be looking for you to greet them. Direct the driver that the bus is to remain on Jefferson and is NOT allowed to enter staging. The buses must proceed all the way down Jefferson as far down the block located between Johnson and Dodge. Park buses on both sides of the street.
Finish Line Controllers
You will be stationed at the tail end of the parade at Gilbert and Iowa. It is your responsibility to politely yell at parade entries to continue moving forward and stay out of the way of the following entries. If entries pause at the finish line, floats will begin to back up and the parade will come to a halt.
Parade Clean-up
You are responsible for general clean-up of the parade route and the taking down of any of the following: parade announcer’s stage, folding chairs, tables, or the Informational tent.
