The Interdisciplinary Program in Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) enables students to pursue individual interests while exploring the full range of liberal arts and science disciplines. LSA majors design individualized plans of study that relate personal goals and academic interests to broad issues in the humanities, sciences, arts, and professions. One student might study ethics as it relates to business, law, and medicine; another, relations among science, society, and values; and still another, the arts within a particular cultural context. Central to the LSA program are team-taught interdisciplinary seminars that challenge students to consider ideas from diverse points of view. The seminars are small-group, roundtable discussions led by two or more faculty members representing different departments and disciplinary perspectives. Together, faculty members and students examine values and judgments rooted in liberal arts and science disciplines. LSA courses are open to undergraduates from any department or college. Frequent consultations with an adviser, as well as care in preparing the required statement of purpose, ensures that students shape the major to suit individual goals, whether those goals include preparation for professional careers or further study in graduate school.
