When the new coil built jar is the right shape, the potter forms the rim. Often clay is added at this point to thicken and strengthen the pot. A tremendous amount of care is taken to ensure a smooth, even, well-formed rim. The potter uses a small piece of wet cloth, untanned animal hide, or wet leaves to smooth and shape the wet clay. There are two reasons why such care is taken in finishing the rim of the pots. A badly formed rim may be weak and liable to crack, and often the quality of the potter's works and her ability and skill are judged by the finish given to the rim of her pots.
