Meet the Iowa Journalist Staff

Writer Aaron Brim is a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a major in journalism and English. In 1999, Aaron won first place for his music reviews in the Iowa Press Women’s High School Journalism Contest. He is an arts and entertainment reporter at The Daily Iowan and contributes to the UI Honors Newsletter. He plans to study journalism in Australia, work as an intern in Washington, D.C., and eventually become a music reporter and critic
Writer and copy editor Colleen Connolly is a junior from Granger, Iowa, with majors in marketing and entrepreneurial studies and a minor in journalism. Colleen looks forward to testing her academic abilities at the University of Wales-Swansea next semester. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school on the East Coast and pursue a career overseas. Her long-term goal is to become an entrepreneur and travel.
Web designer and writer Dana Deuell is a junior from Clarksville, Iowa. She is a journalism major with an emphasis in sociology. She works for the UI Facilities Services Group and the UI Honors Program producing internal and external public relations materials. She also writes for Women’s Edition magazine, volunteers for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and is vice president of the UI SPJ chapter.
Writer Melissa Erbes is a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a major in journalism, a sociology minor and a second area of interest in business and marketing. She is editorial supervisor of Women’s Edition magazine where she writes, edits, assigns stories and creates ads. After graduation, she plans to utilize her journalism skills and experience as a single mother of two and write for a family-oriented magazine.
Writer Kelsey Fix is a senior from Ankeny, Iowa. with a major in journalism and a second area of concentration in health, leisure and sport studies. This summer she worked for the UI as a site coordinator at the Iowa State Fair. Kelsey will graduate in December and plans on working in public relations and events planning. After being a student-athlete at the UI, Kelsey would also enjoy working in a collegiate athletics department handling media relations.
Writer and Web designer David Freund is a senior from Park Forest, Ill., with a major in journalism and an emphasis in marketing. He has worked in news and production for KRUI since January 2001. He also works as an ITC monitor in Seashore Hall and is part of the Iowa Hawkeye Ultimate Club (IHUC), a competitive inter-collegiate Ultimate Frisbee club team. After graduation he hopes to find a career in radio or Web design
Copy editor and designer Melissa Hughes is a senior from Cresco, Iowa, with a major in journalism and communication studies. She has interned at The Times-Plain Dealer, and worked at The Daily Iowan and The Ames Tribune. She is a newscaster for KRUI and volunteers at the Women’s Resource and Action Center. After graduation, she hopes to work for a non-profit organization or publishing firm.
Writer Vanessa Miller is a senior from Denver, Colo., with a double major in journalism and religion. She has written for The Daily Iowan for two years and spent last year writing for The Iowa City Press-Citizen. Last summer, she interned at the Rock Island Argus/Dispatch and spent time updating the Web site of the online publication, Our Sports Central. After graduation, she hopes to write for a newspaper.
Designer and writer Kristin Phelan is a senior from Readlyn, Iowa. As a journalism and art major, she has been a page designer and copy editor at The Daily Iowan, a communications intern at Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and an editorial and art intern with Jerome Press Publications in Boston, Mass. Kristin looks forward to a post-graduation path leading to more creative work in publication design.
Writer and designer Laura Podolak is a senior from Basalt, Colo., with a double major in journalism and sports studies. She has been a sports reporter for The Daily Iowan and is now an assistant sports editor and feature writer. She is a sportscaster for KRUI and is an intern at KGAN-TV. She has also been an intern at WMT radio. In addition, she designs and edits the Web site for Club del Mar in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica.
Photographer Carolyn Sommers is a senior from Chicago, Ill., with a double major in anthropology and journalism. She is a photo/writing intern with the International Programs’ Media Relations and has served on the staff of the UI’s literary magazine Earthwords for two years. Carolyn plans to study in Spain this spring. After graduation, she hopes to pursure a career in documentary photography and journalism.
Photographer Audrey Vozenilek is a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a double major in journalism and art. She is currently a member of the UI’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and she also works for the Area Substance Abuse Council. After graduation, she plans on writing for a magazine and would like to pursue layout and design as well as photography.
