Master of Science (Without Thesis) in Athletic Training General Information

The academic program leading to the M.S. degree without thesis is primarily designed as a terminal degree for athletic trainers.  Emphasis is placed on the application of established research findings to the wide variety of problems encountered in everyday practice.  Students in the other areas of specialization may be granted admission to the non-thesis program under special circumstances.

ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM
The M.S. non-thesis degree program in athletic training is designed primarily as an advanced clinical education and research area of study for the certified athletic trainer.  Emphasis is on developing and applying a research and education base to the knowledge and skills of the entry-level athletic trainer.  The program focuses on a health care team approach to sports medicine, undergraduate professional preparation, and sports injury/medicine epidemiology.

Undergraduate Prerequisite Courses (30 sh.)

The following undergraduate courses are prerequisites for the non-thesis M.S. degree program in athletic training. Designated semester hours (sh) are listed next to each class.

Anatomy (3-4 sh)
Human Physiology (3 sh)

Athletic Training Core
Prevention (3 sh)
Evaluation and Recognition (3 sh)
Modalities (3 sh)
Rehabilitation (3 sh)
Administration (2 sh)

Integrative Physiology Core
Motor Control  (3 sh)
Exercise Physiology (3 sh)
Biomechanics (3 sh)

Current Emergency Certification
NATA Certification

In addition to the academic requirements held for all M.S. degree with thesis candidates, athletic training candidates who are offered graduate assistantship appointments with the University Athletic Training Services or with the Iowa City Community School District must obtain NATABOC certification status by August before the beginning of the first fall semester.  In the event NATABOC certification is not obtained, the graduate appointment will be canceled.
