The 16th Annual Louis E. Alley Memorial Lecture:
Dr. Louis E. Alley served as our department chair from 1960 to 1978 and was particularly noted for innovations in graduate education. His leadership set the foundation for the current nature of the academic professors in Exercise Science / Integrative Physiology. The Louis E. Alley Memorial Lecture was established in 1992 by a generous donation from the Alley family and given in remembrance of his numerous contributions to our department.
Steven L. Wolf, Ph.D. was the guest speaker for the 16th Annual 2008 Alley Memorial Lecture. His lecture was entitled: "Upper Extremity Rehabilitation for Stroke Survivors: Recent Findings and Future Opportunities".
Dr. Wolf received his AB in Biology from Clark University, his physical therapy certificate from Columbia University, MS in physical therapy from Boston University and his Ph.D. in neurophysiology from Emory University. He has defined the
selection criteria for the application of EMG biofeedback to restore upper extremity function among chronic patients with stroke. These findings became the inclusion criteria for most constraint induced movement therapy stroke studies. He recently completed his role as Principal Investigator for the NIH nationally funded EXCITE Trial, the first multi-center Phase III non surgical, non-pharmacological, upper extremity stroke rehabilitation study ever funded by the NIH. His interests in feedback also led to the comparison of center of pressure biofeedback with Tai Chi for falls reduction in older adults. He has over 200 publications and 600 national and international presentations on these topics.
Previous Alley Lecturers ( Lecture Titles) Include:
2007: Douglas Seals, Ph.D. (Habitual Exercise in the Prevention and Treatment of Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction with Aging).
2006: Susan F. Harkema, Ph.D. ("Recovery of Function and Health After Neurologic Injury).
2005: John S. Smeda, Ph.D. ("Alterations in Cerebrovascular Function Associated with Hemorrhagic Stroke").
2004: Mattias Clauss, Ph.D. ("Endothelial Cell Activation: Angiogenic and Inflammatory Mechanisms").
2003: Dr. Randolph J. Nudo ("Repairing the Damaged Brain in the 21st Century").
2002: Dr. Mary Lloyd Ireland ("Gender Differences in ACL Injuries: Epidemiology, Mechanism of Injury, Treatment, Surgical Management and Prevention").
A Message From Jerry A. Maynard, Ph.D & Deparmental Executive Officier: Our Deparmental Name Change Indicates Expanded Teaching and Research Focus
The renaming of the Department of Exercise Science in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to the Department of Integrative Physiology reflects growth in the curriculum as well as changes in the nature and breadth of research conducted by departmental faculty. These changes are reflected in the undergraduate and graduate programs and have resulted in an increased popularity of the undergraduate major for pre-health profession students, in particular. Over the next few years, we anticipate and look forward to similar growth in the graduate program. The name change was approved at the August meeting of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
At the undergraduate level, Integrative Physiology is a natural science major in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). The other natural science majors include the departments of Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Psychology and Statistics at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, Integrative Physiology is a Biological/Biomedical Sciences program. The Biological/Biomedical Sciences at The University of Iowa also include Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Bioscience Program, Free Radical Radiation Biology, Genetics, Immunology Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Physiology and, Speech Pathology and Audiology. Graduate Student Opportunities For 2007-08 Academic Calender Year:
The Department of Integrative Physiology will have several openings for new Ph.D. candidates. Ph.D. candidates receive 1/2 time graduate appointments and partial to full tuition scholarships. For the current academic year, 1/2 time stipends are $15,985. Summer appointments are in addition to the academic stipend. Please see the Graduate Programs and Faculty pages (links on navigation bar above) for additional information related to areas of specialization and faculty research emphases.

The Integrative Physiology Information Technology Center (ITC) is located in 402 Field House. The IT Center includes 16 PC computer workstations. Students enrolled in Anatomy Lab (27:053 and 27:151) and Exercise Physiology Lab (27:142) use the workstations to supplement their regular instructional activities. The computer software students use for the anatomy and physiology laboratories include ADAM Interactive Anatomy and ADAM Interactive Physiology. ADAM Interactive Anatomy assists students in “dissecting” the human body from different views. ADAM Interactive Physiology allows students to view and manipulate operations of the various body systems.
