The Athletic Training Program provides concentrated studies and clinical experiences leading to national certification in athletic training. Employment opportunities for graduates include serving as health care professionals for sports medicine clinics and hospitals. Additional education is usually required for employment with professional teams as well as university, college, and secondary school athletic teams. Teacher certification is recommended but not required.Students who have not formally contacted the Athletic Training Program Director before enrolling at The University of Iowa should talk to an athletic training adviser or collegiate adviser upon entering the University. Early advising should be sought for course counseling since prerequisite courses and sequenced skill development must be completed along with general education course work. Prerequisite course work for required major courses should be started during the freshman year and completed after admission to the Athletic Training Program. Prerequisites include: biological sciences, chemistry, physics, psychology, anatomy, growth and development, health, statistics, educational psychology, first aid and CPR, and basic athletic training. Specific course recommendations for the prerequisites are available from the Program Director.
