HOUSING

The Residence Hall:
Studio participants live in Currier
Hall on the University of Iowa's campus. Currier is a stately, traditional
building located on a tree-lined street near the heart of the University's
campus. A courtyard, several lounges, laundry rooms, vending machines, a game
room, a grand piano, and most importantly, a computer lab are some of its
amenities. The residence hall and its surroundings are well lit. Currier's
doors are locked each night and University security officers make regular
rounds of each floor. Each student room can be locked from the inside. A Residence
Hall Manager is available 24 hours a day. Since the rooms in Currier are doubles,
participants are assigned roommates. Students fill out a questionnaire to
help the Studio in choosing compatible roommates.
Counselors:
The Studio hires its own counselors, who then undergo training from the
University of Iowa. There will be at least one counselor on each hall for
every 12 students. Their job is to help participants develop a safe, creative
community. In addition, they act as a liaison between the students and the
Studio administrators. Counselors are in charge of supervising evening activities
just as instructors supervise daytime activities. Writers themselves, our
counselors can offer expert advice, act as a sounding board for new ideas,
or help organize a writing group within the residence hall.
Rules:
In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable living experience, there are a number of rules that all Studio participants must follow. Some of these rules are:
-Smoking and/or the use of alcohol or other illegal
substances is strictly prohibited.
-Nightly room check-in and morning roll call are mandatory.
-Students must be on their hall by 10:30 p.m.
-Lights out is at midnight.
-Participants may not have a car at the Studio.
[A complete list of rules will accompany acceptance packages. In order to
attend the Studio, all participants must sign a form stating that they have
read the rules and will agree to live by them.]
