Three insightful workshops. One new building.

Use the summer to take your high school's publications and journalism classes to the next level. Spend up to three weeks at the University of Iowa learning in the new, state-of-the-art Adler Journalism Building.

Offered throughout the summer, our workshops often include instruction in newspaper and yearbook advising, designing with InDesign and coaching writers. See descriptions of our 2008 workshops on the Our Workshops page. Each workshop is worth between one and three graduate credits, which can count towards journalism certification. Take up to 8 hours during the summer.

At our workshops, you can network with journalism teachers from around the nation as you learn from nationally recognized faculty members through lectures, lab periods and one-on-one interaction.

Kennedy returns as workshop instructor
Rejoining the staff to teach yearbook and newspaper/newsmagazine advising is Jack Kennedy, of Rock Canyon HS, Colo. A nationally renouned high school journalism teacher, Kennedy replaced Richard Johns, executive director of Quill and Scroll, who has retired from teaching the workshops after many years.

Using advice, tools, forms, teaching ideas, leadership ideas and technical tips, Kennedy plans to teach a workshop in which teachers will leave with useful strategies and activities. Students' First Amendment rights, the quandaries presented by students who rely on electronic sources for news, students who seemingly don't pay attention to the news and students who seldom read for pleasure will be addressed as well.
