Development of music skills, techniques, knowledge of methods and materials for teaching music to young children; for elementary education majors.

07S:096 Introduction and Practicum: Music 2 s.h.
Experience observing and assisting music teachers and students in elementary or secondary schools. Students need to have at least six hours per week available during the day to observe in area schools in addition to the weekly on-campus class meetings.

Discussions, role-playing, group and individual reports, analysis of critical incidents, classroom management, videotapes of student classroom performance pertinent to participants' student teaching experiences. Corequisites: 07E:192:020 and 07S:191:061.

07S:191:061 Observation and Laboratory Practice in the Secondary School 6 s.h.
Student teaching at the secondary level (7-12). Corequisites: 07S:187:061 and 07E:192:020.

Fundamental skills in wind and percussion instruments.  Music TEP students need 3 semesters. Section 001 (Percussion/Flute) meets in fall semesters.  Section 002 (Brass) and section 003 (Woodwinds) meets in spring semesters.

This survey/technique course is designed primarily for students in the B.M. teacher certification program. The course presents fundamentals of playing and teaching the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Course content focuses on cultivating students' proficiency with string instruments as well as developing their ability to evaluate and teach basic principles of string playing. Section 001 is for band students and is offered in fall semesters.

This survey/technique course is designed primarily for students in the B.M. teacher certification program. The course presents fundamentals of playing and teaching the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Section ARR (Section 002) is for string students and is offered in fall and spring semesters. String students take Class Strings 3 times, studying with a Teaching Assistant. An instructor number and approval are required for registration in this section. Contact Professor Don Coffman for the instructor number, which you enter as the section number when you register. Contact the Teaching Assistant to make time and place arrangements.

Professional Core Education Courses

For ALL music education students:

Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program before they are allowed to register for an undergraduate music education course beginning with a "07" prefix. Some courses are cross-listed with an "025" music number and are open to non-TEP students.

07B:180 Human Relations for the Classroom Teacher 3 s.h.
The course focuses on social factors such as discrimination, diversity, equity, racism, sexism, and ethnic and socioeconomic pluralism and their influence on American schools and classrooms. Class activities and assignments are diverse and vary among the sections. All sections take the final exam at the same hour, and one half of the final exam is based on the lectures. Three texts and a course pack are required. The format is lecture and discussion with one hour of lecture and three hours of discussion each week. The lectures are given by faculty members, discussion instructors, and guest speakers. The discussion sections are led by TAs.

07P:075 Educational Psychology and Measurement 3 s.h.
Principles and classroom applications of cognitive development, social development, learning, cognition, problem solving, individual differences, motivation, testing, assessment.

07S:100 Foundations of Education 3 s.h.
Overview of contemporary American education, preschool through secondary; including aims, history, philosophy of education; professional ethics, legal responsibilities; school curriculum, organization; school law, finance; political, social issues.

07S:102 Technology in the Classroom 3 s.h.
Operation and application of computer, video, and multimedia equipment and programs in schools; evaluation and selection of instructional software, use of the Internet and other communication tools. Students should take this course during their first semester in the TEP program.

07S:190 Orientation to Secondary Education 1 s.h.
Overview, including options for student teaching, classroom observation, lesson planning, classroom management, performance indicators, INTASC standards, blood borne pathogens, professional ethics. Eight weeks. Students should take this course during their first semester in the TEP program.

07S:195 Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Areas 1 s.h.
Eight weeks. Students should take this course during their first semester in the TEP program.

07U:100 Foundations of Special Education 3 s.h.
Students with disabilities, gifted and talented; strategies for effective treatment, collaboration between regular and special education teachers; remediation of academic, behavioral, social problems.
