The
University of Iowa School of Social Work has had a longstanding commitment
to the power of learning about U.S./Latin American relations through
the practice of immersion learning and community exchanges. Beginning
in 1976 when
Professor Tom Walz took the first undergraduate class to Michoacán,
México, the School has continued its commitment to providing academic
credit for immersion learning in the U.S. and in other countries.

Social
Work Travel Student Seminar in Mexico: Elders, Children and La Familia
Latino , August 3-14, 2008 (course-related activities begin
June 13 and end September 19, 2008). The Travel Seminar to Mexico
will give students an opportunity to earn 3 s.h. of credit while
learning about elders or children in Mexico , and the role of family
and social services in providing care for these vulnerable groups.
This is also an opportunity to learn about Latino culture and life
in Mexican cities and towns. Social Work (BA and MSW) students and
Aging Studies students are especially encouraged to apply. For further
