Old Capitol Dome Arrives in Iowa City

The new Old Capitol dome arrived in Iowa City Monday morning, following a four-hour-plus drive from the site of its construction at Renaissance Restoration, Inc. of Galena, Ill. The dome, about 18 feet wide and 12,000 pounds in weight, is a replacement for the original, destroyed in a Nov. 20, 2001 fire. Workers plan to gild the dome in gold before hoisting it atop the Old Capitol in the coming weeks. Knutson Construction Services Inc. of Iowa City is the contractor for the first phase of the Old Capitol restoration project.
