Return to UI Hurricane Aid home

The following statement was sent out to the University of Iowa community Sept. 1, 2005 by UI President David Skorton.

University of Iowa students, staff and faculty,

Hurricane Katrina’s trail of devastation calls for an immediate response. The toll in loss of life, livelihood and property cannot yet be measured, but we know that those suffering in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi need our sympathy and generosity to help them cope with the aftermath of the hurricane and to begin putting their lives back together.

If you have not already done so, you can make an immediate donation to the relief organizations that are attempting to provide food, water, shelter and medical attention to all of those in need. It is clear that the need will be great and continuing for weeks to come, if not months.

It is encouraging that already students, faculty and staff are making plans to offer assistance. In addition, we are working with other universities in the Association of American Universities to help students, faculty and staff at Tulane University, an AAU member. We are also eager to assist other colleges and universities in the area. The details remain to be worked out, but we will do our best to make you aware of developments in this effort and other efforts. If you have ideas for how best to help, please share them with us. Your responses can be sent to president@uiowa.edu.
