Phi Alpha Delta

Prospective Member Program

Dear Prospective Member:

Welcome to our Phi Alpha Delta informational meeting!

The following pages contain essential information that you will need to know about our prospective member program.  Most importantly, if you would need to contact any of the officers for whatever reason, included is all of their contact information.  Another excellent resource for you would be our website (www.uiowa.edu/~pad/).  We gather input from members and keep it updated with information to benefit active and prospective members of Phi Alpha Delta.  We strongly encourage you to visit it!  All of our contact information and meeting dates are posted there as well.

As Vice-President, I will be working closely with you, the prospective member class, to make sure all of your questions are answered.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns and ideas!  The Executive Board has created many fun and educational events for you to attend, which will give you the opportunity to meet other members.  I strongly encourage you to attend as many as possible because it will be to your advantage to meet members of your class and active members as well.  However, we are all college students and realistically school and work can tie us all down sometimes.  Please dont let this get in the way of the Phi Alpha Delta experience.  We are flexible to your needs because we want you to enjoy your time with us and we want to help you get your foot in the door of law school!

On behalf of the Executive Board of Phi Alpha Delta, we would like to thank you for coming out tonight.  We cant wait to see you at our upcoming events!  We have a lot of great things planned-so dont miss out!

Sincerely,

PAD Executive Board

Phi Alpha Delta

Prospective Member Program

Our prospective member program is based around a point system.  The maximum amount of points you can receive is 45 and the minimum amount of points to be considered for initiation is 35.  Events for a prospective member to attain their points from will be held throughout this semester, which ends with an initiation ceremony only if that member is eligible.  The point system is based on the following:

Point Distribution:

Volunteering:                            10

Parent Meeting & Social:          10

Educational:                              10

Social:                                      5

Dues:                                       5-0

Exam:                                       5-0

_______________________________

Total:                                       45 pts

If you know in advance that you cannot make it to one of these events, you must give documentation to the Executive Board.  However, in the event of an emergency, please notify us as soon as possible.

VOLUNTEERING (10 pts):

Throughout the semester there will be opportunities to choose from for the volunteering portion of the point system.  You are required to attend at least one of these events.  You will receive 10 points for attending one of these.  (If you know of any service projects/volunteering in the community that you would like our organization to participate in, please let the Volunteering Chairperson know.)

PARENT MEETING & SOCIAL (10 pts):

Later on in the semester we will be having a pledge-parent guessing.  This is a social event worth 5 points in which you will guess the identity of your parent.  The Vice President will match you to a pledge parent, (active member of the organization who volunteered to initiate prospective members).  Hazing practices by any members are not allowed and will result in the removal of the offending member from the organization.  If this happens, let the President know immediately.  Your pledge parent will give you information that you will need to know for the Initiation exam and can be of further help to answering your questions about Phi Alpha Delta.  Aside from the pledge-parent guessing social, you will need to meet with your parent one more time outside of Phi Alpha Delta to receive the full 10 points.

EDUCATIONAL (10 pts):

The main goal of our organization is to help you the best that we can with any pre-law questions.  Throughout the semester there will be opportunities to choose from for the educational portion of the point system.  You are required to attend at least one of these events.  You will receive 10 points for attending one of these.  (If you have any ideas or issues about law school that you would like to see addressed as an educational, please let the Educational Chairs know.)

SOCIALS (5 pts):

Attending socials is a great way to get to know other members of your class and active members as well.  The pledge-parent guessing falls into this category, along with other social events the Executive Board has planned.  You are required to attend at least one of the socials, ideally the pledge-parent guessing.  You will receive 5 points for attending one of these.

DUES and application (5-0pts):

Dues and applications will need to be turned in to the Treasurer BY NEXT FRIDAY!  The cost is $100.00, check only, written out to PHI ALPHA DELTA.  $70 of the dues is sent to Nationals and $30 is kept for our local chapter.  Once you are an active member dues are reduced to $30 per academic year.  The Nationals portion of your dues is a one-time fee.  If you have a reason to delay the payment of dues, please do not hesitate to let the Treasurer know before NEXT FRIDAY!

Point Distribution for Dues & Application:

Today-NEXT Friday      5 pts

After NEXT Friday         0 pts

INITIATION EXAM (5-0 pts):

The exam contains five multiple-choice questions regarding the history and philosophy of Phi Alpha Delta.  For each question you answer correctly, you will earn 1 point; therefore the maximum amount of points you can earn from the test is 5, minimum being 0.  All the information you will need to know for the exam will be given to you by your parent.

VOTING

Closer to the end of the semester, after the Initiation exam, each prospective member will be voted on by active members.  The Executive Board recommends that only those prospective members earning 35 points and above be voted into the group.  Again, if for any reason attendance is/becomes a conflict, you need to let the Executive Board know immediately.  It is to your advantage to attend the events offered by Phi Alpha Delta to interact with active members.

MEETINGS

Meetings are an essential part of Phi Alpha Delta and occur every other week.  You will be excused from meeting for class, illness and emergencies.  All other conflicts can be brought up to the Executive Board.

INITIATION

This is a required event for all members of this organization, as prospective members who have been voted in will become full members of Phi Alpha Delta.  Time, location and date will be announced later on in the semester, as well as posted online.  As with all other circumstances, if for some reason you would not be able to attend this ceremony you MUST let the Executive Board know immediately.  If possible, last minute emergencies should be communicated to the Executive Board by telephone.
