Spring 2007 Hours:
Monday - Thursday 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
The Speaking Center helps students improve their public speaking, gain confidence in joining class discussion, and to improve basic conversational language skills.
The Speaking Center staff provides one-on-one instruction for students who want to improve their speaking performance in Rhetoric classes or other domains of university life. Students who sign up early in the semester can receive individualized instruction 30 minutes per week for an entire semester. Instruction depends on your individual needs and includes help with delivery techniques, methods of organizing material, strategies for effective presentations, options for preparing and practicing speeches, and methods of generating and using responses to speeches for further improvement.
The Speaking Center is also a resource for Graduate Teaching Assistants who are currently serving as instructors for GER Rhetoric courses. We can provide assistance with designing formal and informal assignments, grading rubrics, as well as instructional materials for use by your students. We are also available to come to your class to present informative and instructional sessions on overcoming public speaking anxiety, organizing solo and group presentations, and effective strategies for 'active listening'.
The Speaking Center is also co-sponsoring weekly "Conversations for ESL" sessions, each will feature a 'theme' and meet in The Writing Center from 11:00 am - Noon on Fridays. These group conversation sessions will begin on February 2nd, 2007.
We will be updating with a link to the semester's schedule in the coming weeks.
